Emerging Scottish multi-instrumentalist Faodail brings his deftness in producing expansive, affective sounds to a new EP via Enhanced Chill. Already racking up over eight million streams on Spotify and earning high praise across the BBC and US radio giant Sirius XM, his new collection of works is set to bolster his rising status as one of the most exciting new artists in the ambient world.
Heavily inspired by experimental electronica emanating from the Nordic countries, the EP shifts from melancholy to elation and back again. His second release on UK imprint Enhanced Chill, it offers an intimate insight into Faodail’s year through 2020 as a diary of sorts, which brings his experiences into the sonic plane and showcases his artistry in calling upon memories and emotions to deliver an invigorating body of work. With him already giving us a taster with the release of ‘Bloom’ in January, the second single ‘Painting With Shades’ is set to follow mid-March.
Utilising his immediate surroundings, he often weaves field recordings from Scotland’s great outdoors and far flung travels into his highly-textured productions. With a background in live music, having played drums and gigged around Glasgow in punk and grunge bands, he also invests his time in experimenting with acoustic instruments, including his guitar, violin and vintage 1950s Bentley piano.
“When I’m writing I’m constantly chasing that feeling of stumbling across a musical idea that gets me excited. There’s no better form of meditation than being singularly focused on something to the extent that the rest of the world is totally shut off and that’s where I find the real value in writing music.” – Faodail
‘Bloom’ having been written in spring and being the first track which saw him break through a writer’s block, comes through with an uplifting melody which represents the joy he felt at finding his flow, while ’Painting In Shades’ is spacious and wistful, bringing through a sense of nostalgia and longing for better times, with Norwegian vocalist Kokadu delivering a striking, tender vocal performance. Third single ‘Changing’ is another that leans into a sense of longing, capturing the feeling that was undoubtedly shared among many, in that we wished we could transport ourselves to any other year. The energy picks up again with the brisk pace in ‘Gloss’, a track Faodail highlights as his favourite, with us hearing piano notes, muted strings and experimental percussion.
You can now listen to the full premiere of ‘Madainn’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy!
